There is perhaps no better way to describe the artist than to phrase him, the spark a mind needs to pause the sands in the hour glass. As a poet, musician, and composer Jerry Laroque is destined to become one of the most important artists of this time.
Born August 2, 1984 in Brooklyn, New York of Haitian descent, Laroque has been shaped and influenced from the rich culture of the world around him. Raised in church and attending private schools in his grade years, he has been performing from the tender age of six and hasn’t slowed down since. At a young age, Laroque exhibited a natural affinity for the arts. Whether it was him participating in his church band, performing in grade school or teaching himself how to play the guitar – Laroque has
always had innate love for music and writing.
Coming up in the urban realm of Brooklyn, Laroque had a distinct differentiation from his peers. While most teenagers were concerned with having the latest pair of Jordans and yearned for acceptance from their friends; Laroque thrived at spending hours reading books like Catcher in the Rye or Contemporary
Latin American Short Stories while playing tunes of Billy Joel, Mariah Carey and Carlos Santana on his guitar.
Growing in a Christian home, Laroque was exposed to scriptures in the Bible on a consistent basis.
While reading, he developed a special admiration for the book of Psalms. Inspired by the sincerity of
the verses, rhythm and poetry of the book of Psalms, it was there where the interest of writing poetry
and song was born. Soon Laroque began honing in on his natural ability to communicate thru song and
poetry, and has continued to expand on his prowess to do so.
While in college at Stony Brook University, Laroque began sharing his poetry with friends on campus. His
friends encouraged him to start showcasing his talent and at the age of 21, Laroque performed as a poet
for the first time in New York City. In 2006, after a chance meeting with one of the organizers of a show
Laroque was set to perform at; he joined the For the Love of Poetry team as their featured “franchise”
poet. Thru For the Love of Poetry, Laroque has performed at countless venues in New York City and has
gained a dedicated following. His poetry is deemed as soulful, honest, nostalgic and aggressive with the
right touch of smoothness in delivery.
Now as a fully fledged poet, Laroque is expanding his horizons and sharpening his talent as a songwriter
and artist. With influences that range from Dave Matthews Band to Notorious B.I.G to Sade, Laroque
is determined to be an artist of depth who is one of the greatest thinkers of his time, not afraid to go
outside of the box and delivers with unadulterated passion and soul.
