‘I don’t know why i’m still The target… because they fear my true power.’ – Ignorance Driven Knowledge

AGELESSVONKING

Uniting Knowledge and Style

Ignorance Driven Knits, a Clothing Line with the goal to Counteract Ignorance with creative designs with inspiring and motivating statements. The founder of the clothing line was driven by all of the ignorance in the world and searched for a creative way to raise awareness and knowledge to the public, and on March 14, 2012 Ignorance Driven Knits was founded.

Inspiration Behind the Founder

Jordan A. Coburn – CEO & Founder
“My personal inspiration behind the brand is the black male in America. In 2011 I attained the title of Mr. Claflin University 2011-2012, and with that I presented a platform of rebuilding the African American Male. So that summer and on I did a lot of reading on the black male in America. After a couple of books I realized that there was lot of information that I was ignorant to and I’m pretty sure my peers were ignorant to as well, and then I thought of a creative way of bringing that information to the light.
There is also a sense of responsibility to my family, peers, and community that I felt I had to fulfill and inspire others to do it.”

IDK1

Much Love to Ignorance Driven Knits. A Powerful brand that we came across tailored for powerful people. There are so many people making changes and invoking the thoughts of change who are coming out and making it known that they are here to stay and here with a purpose and Jordan Coburn. We were estatic at the opportunity to connect with a brand such as IDK because first and foremost it is important to encourage one another!

IDK2

Besides the message that the clothing line supports, the gear is pretty damn fly. We raffled a few shirts away to the crowd members and the winners were really excited to go online and check out more about what IDK is about. A name goes along way, and so many wear labels, products and brands and have no clue as to what they are wearing or representing and IDK gives us the ability to notice that issue as well as correct it. Big Love to the CEO & Founder of Ignorance Driven Knits for being such a powerful force in the community through his chosen vehicle of expression. Men like Jordan are the people that the youth need to see at the wheel.

#WORDONTHESTREET Taalam Acey

Taalam Acey September 16, 1970 -

Taalam Acey is an American spoken word artist. He began pursuing the art in 1997 after visiting a poetry reading upon the invitation of a friend. At that point in his life, Acey was a full-time lecturer in senior level accounting at Rutgers University and a principal partner in a small business consulting firm. In 1999, Acey left Rutgers University to become a full-time performance poet. Each year, he travels to more than 50 cities in the United States and abroad to share his art and perspectives with enthralled audiences. Much of Acey’s poetry addresses social and political issues from an afro-centric perspective while he maintains a fan base of a wide range of ethinicities. His work also provides a poetic perspective of relationships, whether man to woman, mother to son, or man to man. He champions the struggles of single parenthood and fatherly responsibility.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Acey spent his childhood immersed in the African-centered political analysis. At the time of his birth, his teenage parents were field soldiers in Amiri Baraka’s Community for a Unified Newark (CUAN). Notably, the year of Acey’s birth, CUAN helped Kenneth Gibson become the first black mayor of Newark.

Acey acquired his elementary education at Chad School in Newark. His father had been instrumental in organizing the private school, which employed all African-American staff and administrators. Chad School held high academic expectations of its students. The curriculum was geared to provide a positive sense of self, dispel negative stereotypes about African Americans, and teach the contributions of African Americans in society.

Acey was one of four poets from around the US selected by Essence magazine to feature at the 2001 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. Previous to that, he was chosen to open up for activist Dick Gregory for a live broadcast from the University of Texas at Austin. Acey was one of five poets from around the United States selected to feature in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s ground breaking, “Theater of the Spoken Word”. Acey has also lectured on performance poetry for the University of California at Berkeley’s Center for Urban Education.

Along with Essence magazine (September 2001), his work has been featured in several publications including Philadelphia Weekly (December 2005), New Jersey Star Ledger (July 2001). Marc Smith the founder of slam poetry used examples of Acey’s poetry in Smith’s definitive book on slam poetry- The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Slam Poetry [5] (2004). BBC Radio One (London) featured Acey in its documentary on slam poetry (2000).

Acey was a member of the 1999 New York City slam team representing the world famous Nuyorican Cafe. He was the 2000 Grand Slam Champion of London’s Paddington International Poetry Festival. He was also the 2000-2001 New Jersey Slam master and the District of Columbia’s Black Words Grand Slam Champion.

His first spoken word video “When the Smoke Clearz” was shown in film festivals in Los Angeles, New York, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The video was one of only 22 films nominated for a 2002 Sundance Film Festival On-line Award.

He has won poetry slams and performed his poetry extensively throughout the continental United States, from Los Angeles to Amsterdam as well as in Mexico, Canada, Germany, UK, Jamaica, and Holland. Acey also makes time to perform for non-profit organizations such as shelters that serve as a lifeline to people at tenuous points in their lives. In 2004, Acey worked with Project Stay Free, an at-risk youth program in Delaware (2008) designed to “educate and liberate youth from the juvenile justice system”.

Along with thirteen spoken word CDs, Acey has published an award winning memoir, a novel, a comprehensive compilation of his poetry and most recently, a book titled, Excellent Exposure. Acey describes his latest effort as, “A defiantly open compendium of essays and poems derived from over a decade of success as a full-time world traveling poet. This self expository collection weaves critical thought, blunt introspection and empirical enlightenment.”

Wikipedia.. I know you helped me make this post happen, but let me jump in and say this video I’m about to post is from Taalam Acey from ’07 and it’s still relevant today. -The Street Blogger

#WordOnTheStreet BRETT IN THE CITY

New York, New York – Hello and Hello again! This is your truely the STREET BLOGGER and here I go again! So I want to share with you a Comedy series produced by Darren Mallett, Brett Sanders and Ben Logan. It’s a bold comedy that left me intrigued from beginning to end. It also highlights with a slight tease the stereotypes of today, and makes you think once or twice. Most importantly it is hilarious! It’s good to see independent film makers and writers bring back the essence of “Funny”, the show gave me a ‘Sex In The City’ meets ‘Girlfriends’ kind of vibe, it’s dope! Pearl Taylor is also featured in the comedy….with that said, hit PLAY.

Meet The Guys behind BRETT AND THE CITY:

Brett Sanders, Creator/Exec.Producer/Writer

With the exception of that time he spent in a Mexican prison for male prostitution, Brett Sanders is pretty much just an average guy. The Mexican prison thing was really just a big miss understanding. One day while visiting Tijuana’s Red Light District; out of sheer curiosity, Brett decided to walk up to a group of under cover cops and asked them what was the going local rate for a blow job. However seeing how his Spanish was so horrible, they accidentally mistook him for a gay male hooker trying to negotiate a group rate with them, and then the whole thing just got blown completely out of proportion… (More at BrettInTheCity.com)

 Darren Mallett, Co-Creator/Exec. Producer/Director

Darren Mallett is a producer/director living in NYC. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Tampa, FL; Darren is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. In 2006 he founded the Agape Production Group, a non-profit dedicated to providing performance opportunities for young minority artist in Tampa, Florida. A member of Plastic Flamingo Theater Company where credits include: Get a Clue (director) RIP JD (associate dir)Buddah-Nosh (asst. dir).

Benjamin Logan, Exec. Producer/Asst. Director

Benajmin Logan was raised in Tampa, FL where at an early age, he realized that he wanted to be a part of the arts. Early on in elementary school he met Darren and Pearl Taylor (Yvonne); and since that day he immediately prepared himself for a life in film.
After a few crazy years in his twenties, he found himself with a wonderful career as a filmmaker and has since been enjoying every minute of it. Ben says he can’t wait to see what life has to offer further down the road. He is sure that if he keeps collaborating with great people like Brett & Darren: and keep on fighting the good fight, nothing but good will come to him.

More Webisodes? Check out BrettAndTheCity.com – The Street Blogger

The Brett and the City Web Series is directly based on the hit comedy blog by the same name. The blog originally started out two years ago as a series of hilarious and extremely outrageous short literary stories pulled directly from the life of comedy writer Brett Sanders. However after literally thousands of comments and requests from readers all around the world saying how much they would just LOVE to one day see the crazy scenarios acted out in real life. Brett along with Darren and Ben finally decided to take the most popular stories from the literary blog, and turn them into full fledged webisodes.

EPISODE 2:

Brett and his sock-monkey best friend Bobo, feel threatened by a new employee at CBC Copiers. Brett runs to his wacky therapist, Dr. Jones to find the balls to stand up for himself at work and save his very existence! -Brettandthecity.com

#YEEZYTAUGHTME STREET POET ELITE: Claude McKay

Claude McKay  (1889 – 1948)

Claude McKay was born in Jamaica, West Indies. He was educated by his older brother, who possessed a library of English novels, poetry, and scientific texts. At the age of twenty, McKay published a book of verse called Songs of Jamaica, recording his impressions of black life in Jamaica dialect.

In 1912, he travelled to the United States to attend Tuskegee Institute. He remained there only a few months, leaving to study agriculture at Kansas State University.

He published two sonnets, “The Harlem Dancer” and “Invocation,” in 1917, and would later use the same poetic form to record his reactionary views on the injustices of black life in America. In addition to social and political concerns, McKay wrote on a variety of subjects, from his Jamaican homeland to romantic love, with a use of passionate language.

During the twenties, McKay developed an interest in Communism and travelled to Russia and then to France where he met Edna St. Vincent Millay and Sinclair Lewis.
In 1934, McKay moved back to the United States and lived in Harlem, New York. Losing faith in Communism, he turned his attention to the teachings of various spiritual and political leaders in Harlem, eventually converting to Catholicism.

McKay’s viewpoints and poetic achievements in the earlier part of the twentieth century set the tone for the Harlem Renaissance and gained the deep respect of younger black poets of the time, including Langston Hughes. He died in 1948.
